Salepur ‘Minor’ Rape Case: Accused Tries to Attempt Suicide in Jail Latrine, Foiled

While the accused of the infamous Salepur rape case is in the Sub-Jail after his arrest and being remanded to judicial custody, his attempt to commit suicide inside the jail latrine could be foiled on time by the jail staff on Wednesday morning hours and yet another case has been registered against the accused for attempting suicide.

Salipur Sub-Jail Jailor Runibala Dei said, “The accused was sent to judicial custody here by JMFC Court on 23.04.2018. During his stay in jail he was in sound health. When it was widely published that this rape case meted out to a minor victim after the Union Ordinance is first ever in Odisha and the convict will be awarded death penalty, he (Md Mustafa) has lost his mental balance and has gradually gone into depression. Yesterday (Wednesday) he had been to the jail latrine at 10.30 am. He stayed inside for a long period. When we searched for him, he was with a rope having a loop (made of edge of the towel) his hand inside the latrine. When enquired, he replied that he was attempting suicide by hanging himself.”

“He further claimed that he has not committed the crime, but has been arrested by police. His family members have also been ostracised. As he has been blamed and his parents as well as his wife have also lost social dignity, he didn’t wish to live anymore. Before the Government hangs him to death, he tried to kill self by hanging himself,” the jailor quoted the rape accused.
