International Women’s Day is celebrated for more than a century now. But do you know why we celebrate it on March 8 every year? If not, then we will make you aware of the day.

In the early 20th century, critical debate and great unrest were occurring amongst women. Women’s oppression and inequality compelled women to be more vocal and active in campaigning for change.

In 1908, 15,000 women marched the New York City demanding better pay and voting rights amongst other things.

In the year 1910, a woman called Clara Zetkin, who was the leader of the women’s office’ for the Social Democratic Party in Germany, proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day to press for women’s demands.

The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries accepted Zetkin’s suggestion with unanimous approval and International Women’s Day was observed for the first time in 1911.

The date of International Women’s day is changed to march 8 in 1913 and it is celebrated on the same day every year.
