Global Centre for Traditional Medicine to be set in India by WHO: PM Modi

WHO Director General announced in a video message at the inauguration of two future-ready Ayurveda Institutions in Jaipur and Jamnagar by PM Modi via video conferencing on the 5th Ayurvedic Day.

New Delhi, 13/11: The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement on Friday that the WHO will set up a Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India through a video message at an event where PM Modi inaugurated two future-ready institutions for Ayurveda in Jaipur and Jamnagar via video-conferencing on the occasion of 5th Ayurvedic Day. PM Modi was hopeful and confident that just like India has emerged as the “pharmacy of the world”, the institution made by WHO will become the global wellness centre.

The two institutions for Ayurveda inaugurated by PM Modi, The Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda(ITRA) in Jamnagar, Gujarat and The National Institute of Ayurveda(NIA), Jaipur, Rajasthan are two of the premier institutions of Ayurveda in the country. “I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to open a WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India to strengthen the evidence, research, training and awareness of traditional and complementary medicine,” the Director-General of WHO said. He also added that the new institutions will help WHO’s effort to implement WHO’s traditional medicine plan 2014-2023 that aims to support countries develop policies and action plans to enhance the usage the traditional medicine in their path to a healthier and safer world.

PM Modi expressed his happiness in the fact the ancient medicine system of India is now being practised by western countries and that WHO chose India as the global centre for traditional medicine and thanked the Director-General of WHO. The Ayurveda Day has been celebrated by Ministry of AYUSH every year on the occasion of Dhanteras(Dhanwantari Jayanti) since 2016.
