3 killed in Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Nivar weakens

As per sources, Cyclone Nivar has started to weaken, but torrential rainfall and strong winds continue. The cyclone has also claimed 3lives.

Chennai, 26/11: Cyclone Nivar made landfall overnight near the coastal town of Marakkanam, 30 km north of Puducherry. Hours later, the cyclone started to weaken and has now fallen into the category of “severe cyclonic storm” from “very severe cyclonic storm”. The cyclone has till now claimed 3lives in Tamil Nadu as per the official toll. More than two lakh people had to be evacuated to safe areas from the coastal areas keeping in view of the cyclone.  The State Governments said they were working on “war-footing” amid heavy rainfall and flooding in many parts, and the damage assessment is being done. Cyclone Nivar made landfall at around 2:30 am, with winds of up to 130 km per hour (81 miles per hour), according to the India Meteorological Department.
