Chennai, 9/2: India faced a huge defeat against the visiting England side on Tuesday in Chennai. With this victory by 227 runs, England has taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match series. Chasing a daunting 420 runs for victory Indian team got dismissed for 192 runs. Virat Kohli top-scored for India with 72 runs.
India began the day positively as Shubman Gill and Cheteswar Pujara were looking comfortable at the crease. But Jack Leech had other plans, he picked up Pujara caught at slips and after that, the wickets kept falling regularly. Shubman Gill scored his 3rd fifty before getting out to Anderson. Soon Rahane, Pant, and Sundar followed as India lost 5 wickets in the 1st session itself. Virat and Ashwin had a little partnership in the middle but after Ashwin’s dismissal, India couldn’t hold the ground for much time and were bundled out for 192 runs. For England Left-arm spinner Jack Leech picked up 4 wickets, Anderson got 3, and Bess, Archer, Stokes got one wicket each.
India’s performance in the match, especially the batting has been disappointing. More was expected from the team after a fairytale tour down under. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane’s inconsistency is a major concern for the team. Every time runs cant be expected from the lower order. As far as England is concerned they will take a lot of confidence from the win and hope for a 2012 like performance this time also.
The next test match will be played at the same venue i.e Chennai on February 13.
