WhatsApp payment : Supreme Court issues notice to NPIC and RBI

The Supreme Court today issued a notice to the National Payments Corporation of India and the Reserve Bank of India seeking a reply on the security of the data of transactions made through UPI on WhatsApp. On the petition filed by CPI MP Binoy Viswam, the court has issued notice to NPCI and RBI.

The petitioner has alleged that the authorities are allowing Google, Amazon, Facebook, and WhatsApp to start UPI payment applications without complying with the mandatory condition of storing data in India.

What did the petitioner’s lawyer say?

Senior Advocate Shyam Diwan, appearing on behalf of Binoy Viswam, said that in April 2018, the RBI had issued an order asking these multinational companies to keep all their data safe in a single server in India. This order should have been followed by October 2018. He also told the court that WhatsApp stores the data of its parent company Facebook in servers outside India.
